My 6th grade students have tackled weaving this first half of the year. Learning new vocabulary has become easier because I constantly use the terms during instruction and class work time. They have learned that mistakes are learning opportunities and are more willing to use their mistakes for knowledge gathering.
I am always seeking to give students a different perspective when learning art. Emphasizing how difficult it was for Michelangelo to draw and paint the Sistine Chapel, I had students drawing under the tables to give them the experience of looking up at their artwork. Many of them really enjoyed the process because they could see how difficult it would be to create such work for long periods of time.
