The middle school students are able to work with pottery clay for the first time. They have begun learning to slab roll and coil build pottery vessels. Vocabulary is more extensive and therefore challenging for these students. Each day they approach pottery making with delight and eagerness at what the end product may actually be. Their amusement at the vessels once they have been bisque-fired and then glaze fired is rewarding. My hope is to inspire future artists who can appreciate the work involved in pottery.
Learning about graffiti art was another lesson that most students felt was almost taboo. Graffiti can be a useful and appropriate way for a person to express themselves, if done properly. Using large cardboard recycled from SMART board installations, the students learned to create their interpretation of the school pillars (Respect, Integrity, Cooperation, Responsibility, Volunteerism, Family, Self-Control, Love of Country, and Perseverance) in the style of graffiti art. This let their imaginations and skills shine while giving them a chance to create artwork that usually has a bad reputation.
