I have learned that art and music transcends many barriers when relating to people. When I create either, I am trying to communicate something that may relate to another human being. In this sculpture, War and Peace, it was made with one meaning for me and another for the viewer. This was placed in the Multicultural show at Aims Community College in April 2013 where a juror chooses art that makes it into the gallery. The juror then chooses prizes leaving the president of Aims to pick a piece that she awards the President's Award. My piece, War and Peace, was chosen for the President's Award in 2013. This was a great honor to be recognized as an artist and to have my art purchased.
My artwork expresses a piece of my personality. The above drawing, Octaves, shows my love of music and playing hand bells. Growing up with musical parents was a great advantage. I learned that music touches almost everyone in some fashion and can be a powerful bridge to connect with others. Even though I am no longer a music major, I continue to stretch my musical abilities by learning new instruments and singing in a choir.
My current work as a fiber artist shows my love of the ocean. The Reef is a weaving
in 3 panels that depicts the wonder and beauty of life in exoskeleton form. Fishnet uses the skill of thread painting to show how we are overfishing with no regard to other life that depends on the fish.
