The 5th grade students I teach are mindful about the quality of work they produce. At many intervals during an art lesson I am asked if what they are doing is correct. I find that lessons for these students need to have fewer restrictions in application so that they have more freedom of expression. This gives me a chance to rethink my lessons so that this needed freedom can be accomplished.
Students in each 5th grade class were given pieces of a picture, either George Washington Crossing the Delaware or Paul Revere's Midnight Ride, that were blown up and each piece completes the over all picture. They first translated their portion of the picture onto a larger size piece of paper and then traced that image using the window onto a piece of cloth the same size. Colored pencils were used to color in the pieces on both the cloth and paper. In the final product of a quilt, the students were able to see their efforts in enlarging, transferring and matching or cooperating with fellow student's block interpretation.
