As a second generation teacher, I have discovered that helping students learn creates an incredible feeling of satisfaction. My first experience at teaching was many years ago when I was a teaching assistant in a music midi lab at Phoenix Community College. I was jazzed each day of class and looked forward to the next. A few years later I was asked to be a volunteer teacher at Platte Valley Youth Services Center as the Sewing and Quilting teacher. It was there where the passion for teaching really took flame in my soul. Since then I have had several opportunities to teach and assist in classrooms. This flame has not gone out and I find that I look forward to the experience even today.
The world can be discovered through creative means as well as scientific. When students make art, they are expressing their views of the world through images, symbols and movement. Sometimes an art work can speak more than a book. As an art teacher, my goal is to help students find their voice not only in writing or speech, but in imagery, color or shape. I may or may not help facilitate a budding artist, but my ultimate goal is help students process the information they must learn every day. As an English teacher, my goal is still the same, to help students find their voice. With English learning, students are trying to make sense of a world that speaks different languages. As a teacher, I try to help students navigate meaning using their own language and English.
Through these experiences I have realized that education is a gift that needs to be shared. Teachers facilitate learning which gives students the opportunity to share this gift with each other. As a teacher, my primary goal is to help students discover the world around them. Learning about how the world works is a long process which is why educators spend their time preparing to assist students in any way they can. I find that I want to be one of those teachers who can inspire students to become skilled at finding information on their own and be able to critically think about that information. My only hope is that I can share the gift of education with those I am entrusted to teach.
